The competition registration closed with 845 valid entries since its launch in June. Ninety-eight teams from the academia and industry were on the shortlist for the final. In the final, these teams were divided into six groups for the online or offline defense and review simultaneously.

After fierce competition, two graduate student teams from NJUs School of Journalism and Communication, both made of students enrolled in 2019, were both awarded third prizes with their data journalist works, “The Classic of Mountains and Seas: Fertile Imagination of the Ancient Chinese” and “Records of the Chinese Women’s Volleyball Team as ‘Winner of Ten Championships.’”

The data journalist work, “The Classic of Mountains and Seas: Fertile Imagination of the Ancient Chinese,” by Qin Hanyan, Zhou Zhenyang, and Liu Yi, take “heaven, earth, and human” as the thread that ran through the visualized interpretations of the book The Classic of Mountains and Seas, from the perspectives of landscape, animals, non-human species, and myths.

By applying computerized data processing techniques to their analysis of the book, they have found the significance of this classic to modern Chinese. They have explored the ancient civilization with modern techniques, and, based on their findings, they have drawn a knowledge map closely related to reality.

The other data journalist work, “Records of the Chinese Women’s Volleyball Team as ‘Winner of Ten Championships,’” by Li Danni, Li Guoyi, and Ding Henggong, documents the development of the Chinese women’s volleyball team over the past 42 years. It tells the stories behind the team’s successes to show to people of younger generations the inspiring Spirit of Chinese Women’s Volleyball Team, including the number of competitions won by the team, the tenures and achievements of the coaches, and the height, age, injuries, and life after retirement of the team members.

The seminar on the same day as the competition invited 12 journalism scholars from the academia and industry at home to discuss and compare notes on the journalism education of colleges and universities.
