NJU Students Win 2 Prizes of 9th ‘Campus News Awards’

Two works of students from NJU’s School of Journalism and Communication won prizes at the China Daily sponsored “9th Campus News Awards,whose online award ceremony was held on December 23, 2020.

Cheung Kin-chung, chief secretary for the Administration of Hong Kong, was invited to address at the ceremony as the officiating guest.

Forty-three universities from Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan took part in this competition, including Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, Nanjing University, Communication University of China, Sun Yat-sen University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, University of Macau, Fu Jen Catholic University, Shih Hsin University and so on.

Six hundred and sixty entries from around 2,000 university students were submitted, and 76 works won winner, first runner-up or second runner-up prizes of the 24 awards. 

Li Yuanhao, a student of NJUs School of Journalism and Communication, was the winner of the Best in News Photography with his photo “Vegetable Supply in the Biggest Vegetable Market of Xi’an | My Observation of the Epidemic Prevention.

The news report, “Special Feature on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities | The Blind Orchestra,” by Li Jiahao, Ding Jinzhe and Li Yuanhao, won the first runner-up of the Best in New-Media Reporting (Chinese Category).

Compared with works submitted in previous years, most works this year focused on the Covid-19 epidemic, public events and hot social issues. The number of entries in the forms of video news or new-media news grew sharply this year, and those in the form of data journalism increased by 30% compared with the years in the past.

In his address, Mr. Cheung praised the winning works of this year by saying that they covered an 

extensive range of themes, and he deemed it a symbol of the flourishing of today’s media industry.

He said the diversity of the winning works showed the students paid attention not only to the place where they lived but also to other parts of the world. He also encouraged the university students to acquire a good understanding of the Greater Bay Area, to grasp the opportunities in that area, and to work together for a better Greater Bay Area.

Li Yuanhao participated in the observation project of the epidemic prevention launched by the schools Future Editors’ Office. Following the advice of his teacher Zhuang Yongzhi, he selected vegetable supply during the epidemic in Xi’an as his subject, and he headed to Xinqiao Market, the largest vegetable distribution center in Xi’an, for interviews and photos. The photo taken in that market was the winner of Best in News Photography.

The new-media report, “The Blind Orchestra,” was based on the activities of students at a special education school to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The photos and interview scripts recorded the ordinary but somehow special day when the students were preparing and holding a “gratitude concert” at school. The report was acknowledged as the first runner-up of the Best in New-Media Reporting.

Launched by China Daily in 2012, the “Campus News Awards” has been held for nine consecutive years as of now. The competition is intended to encourage university students to actively take part in campus news reporting and to hone their news writing skills and multimedia production skills.

At the same time, it serves as a communication platform for journalism students from Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.

Professor Hu Zhengrong, a judge, commented that the entries of this year were unprecedentedly 

extensive and profound. The competitors exhibited their novel, deep understanding of society, culture, and current affairs in their various works like hard news, soft news, and short videos. These works showed people the progress in journalism and communication education as well as the upgrading of the media industry.

Huang Yushan, another judge, considered learning about society and interviewing various people a great opportunity for university students’ self-improvement. Some of the works are excellent. Their fluent language, original analysis, and detailed description fully display the competitors concern and passion for society. These works are very close to the professional levels.
