Mr. Song Ping, deputy editor-in-chief of China Daily Asia Pacific, pinpointed that, as an important channel for both China and the world to learn about each other, China Daily was more than a newspaper. It was a new modern media group with over ten platforms including its website, app, Facebook account, Twitter account, Weibo account, WeChat account and electronic newspaper. Its app had around 1.5 million users, and the number of its Facebook followers was over 58 million, higher than that of BBC. Currently, the Asia Pacific office posts several video news on its app, YouTube and other social media every week to build an Asian video news platform for its users.
Professor Fung, who has long engaged in the research on Chinese youth culture, gave a keynote speech, titled “Public Communication in the Digital Era.” He said that only when media understood the values and content preferences of the new generation could they attract the stake holders in this era. To achieve that goal, media should research on not only the media preferences of the young, but also their media consumption habits.

He, a young reporter of China Daily, left Bloomberg in 2014 and joined China Daily Asia Pacific. During her four years here, she persisted in faithful reports and worked diligently on the frontline of collecting and writing political and economic news. For example, she tracked the construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge from start to finish. In the speech, she mentioned the invitation from MTR to take a test ride on Vibrant Express and her interviews on the
Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge to show the students that “a journalist’s pressure comes from not only the laborious work, but also the responsibility to ensure the quality of the news report.”
The ceremony was held at the Hong Kong Baptist University in the evening. Mr. Chan Mo-po, Hong Kong’s financial secretary, and Zhou Li, an editorial board member of China Daily Group and publisher of China Daily Asia Pacific, attended the ceremony, and Zhou gave a speech.
Other attendees included Dr. So Wai-man, undersecretary for Hong Kong Transport and Housing, Mr. Zeng Fanxin, vice minister of Taiwan Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong SAR, Ms. Liang Runzhi, deputy director of Hong Kong Information Services Department, Mr. Gary Chow, executive director of Special Projects of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, and over 250 teachers, students and newspersons from Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
Zhou congratulated the student winners and expressed his hope that though the industry was changing constantly, journalism students could dig into the influential topics in society and together bring progress and development to society with their objective and fair reports and analysis.

“Journalists’ work bears great importance to society, and ‘today’s news is tomorrow’s history,’” said Mr. Chan in his speech. In an era of excessive information and declining traditional media, the function of journalists and media remained irreplaceable. They needed to meet the audience’s demand for reliable and credible news sources with their objective and fair news reports. Thus, journalists should not simply play the role of recording pens, but they should have the abilities to think independently, to research, to ask and to tell stories well so that the readers could easily understand the complicated and important social issues.
He also hoped no matter what the winning students would do after graduation, they could keep the motive of caring about society.
