Synopsis:
The Supreme People’s Court created China Judgments Online on July 1, 2013, and ordered that the judgments from courts at all levels be made public on the website, except for special circumstances. So far, the website has uploaded over 100 million judicial documents with more than 10 billion visits. Tons of such texts may provide social sciences with valuable research materials. In this luncheon, Professor Xia Yiwei will share his experience in participating in a series of recent studies with judgments as the data of their analysis. The studies include “The impact of the gender of the judge on the judgment on rape cases” and “Reducing a penalty by money: The impact of compensation on the sentencing on crimes involved in traffic accidents in China.” Concerning studies of judgments, the speaker will try to discuss the knack of topic selection, research methodology, key and difficult points in such research, and its possible directions in the future.
Bio:
Xia Yiwei is an associate professor at the School of Law at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, and he received his doctorate in sociology from the University of Macau. His research focuses on quantitative research methods, criminal trial behavior, adolescent deviant behavior, substance abuse, and social demography. He has published papers in core journals at home and abroad, including China Review, Journal of Contemporary China, Sociological Methods& Research, the Stata Journal, Journal of Criminal Justice, Deviant Behavior, Social Science Review, and Youth Studies.
